Controlling Word Wrap in Plain Text Emails

Do you send a plain text newsletter from your website and have trouble with text wrapping inappropriately when it's received by your readers?  I think I've figured out the best way around this:

The first time I did this, it was really a pain.....I typed everything in the email, then went back and added a hard carriage return at the end of each line, APPROXIMATELY where I wanted it to wrap.  NOT  an easy or time-efficient workaround, I must say.

Then I tried creating it as a text file.  I figured the text should be approximately 65 characters to avoid wrapping inappropriately on MOST readers screens.  So, I added a line at the top of the text document that said this:

01234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234

Then I just typed the newsletter and hit Enter every time a word was going to go past these parameters.  Well this did work, but I had to keep scrolling to the top of my document to see the numbers, then when I scrolled back down to the place where I was typing, the numbers could not be seen, so this was very approximate.  Plus, then I had to copy and paste it into an email to send it and sometimes, once it was in there, I STILL had to make adjustments.

Now I've figured out a more precise way to do this:

I looked at the email when I received it and noticed that the subject line identifier (ie: "Subject:  ") was 10 characters long, including the space between it and the actual subject.  So, I opened a new blank email message and put this in the subject line:

0123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234

Which is 65 characters, minus the ten characters used by the Subject tag.

Now I can type my newsletter directly into an email and hit enter when I get to the last number....and because the numbers are in the subject line, they stay right at the top of my newsletter like a ruler.

Works well for me.  If anyone else has any other suggestions how to do this in an even easier way, I would LOVE to hear them.
