I just love it when I stumble across something by accident ... well, in this case, it was with a little nudge from Numenor at ModTheSims2.

Anyway, I won't bore you with all the details of how I discovered this, but if you want to know, you can read this thread at the ModTheSims2 forums. But, the bottom line is, until now, no one knew it was possible to make a new fireplace without altering some of the game files, but I've found a way to do it!

Here's the facts:

This Modern Fireplace is NOT in Build Mode. It's in Buy Mode, in Appliances>Miscellaneous.

When you first buy it, it will not have a chimney attached to it and you will not be able to move it once you've placed it in a house. You WILL be able to delete it, but not move it. That is, unless you've read the following instructions :-)

Here's the simple, down-and dirty instructions:

1. Buy the Modern Fireplace in the Appliance section>Miscellaneous and place it anywhere in the house. (Notice when you buy it, it has no chimney and you can't move it. Just leave it where it is, or if you tried to move it, just press your Escape key.)

2. Go to Build mode and click on any fireplace in there that has the chimney type you want. The brick one or either of the stove pipe types.

3. Return to Buy mode and click on my Modern Fireplace that you've placed in the house and a chimney matching the one you clicked on in Build mode is added to it! And, now you can move it anywhere you want!

Additional Information:

If you simply go into Build mode and click on any fireplace in there before you buy this fireplace, then you can go buy it, place it in the house, then pick it up and it will have the chimney you clicked on in Build mode and you can move it wherever you want.

You can still use it without any chimney if that's what you want. Just be careful when you place it because you won't be able to move it. (and be sure you haven't gone into Build mode and clicked on any fireplace before you buy this one). If you want to use it without a chimney, use the > and < keys on your keyboard to rotate it while you're still holding it, because once you let go of it, you won't be able to move it (unless you add a chimney to it.) Or, you can always click the Undo button if you put it in the wrong place.

And, if you ever go into Build mode and click on any fireplace in there, the next time you click on this one in Buy mode, it will have a chimney. To avoid that, just leave the house and go to Neighborhood view and come back.

Also, after you've assigned a chimney. If you ever go into Build mode and click on any fireplace, when you go into Buy mode and click on this fireplace in the game, a new chimney may be assigned, depending on which one you clicked on in Build mode. But, you can always just go back to Build mode again and click on the chimney you want and then reassign it to this fireplace.

Easily Recolored
and works like a regular fireplace

It works just like a regular fireplace. You can place stuff on the mantle and put stuff on the wall behind it. You can light it, stoke it, etc. And, it's really easy to recolor!

Oh...and here's another cool thing...once the chimney is assigned, it's even recolorable :-) Of course, that's done the same way you recolor any other chimney, and it requires the CEP files.
