Microsoft FrontPage
Tips & Tutorials

Awarded 9/20/01
Have you heard rumors that FrontPage is
being discontinued and will no longer be part of Microsoft
Office in the 2007 version? Well, that is correct.
Microsoft's new alternatives to FrontPage are SharePoint
Designer (for offices using SharePoint Server) and
Expression Web Designer (for web designers in general).

(Special thanks to

definitely has one of the most helpful FrontPage websites on the
net. I can't tell you how many times she has patiently answered
questions for me. Tina...you are the best, girl!!)
AND,
she writes a FrontPage column in my Web-azine ... hop on

Who
says FrontPage can't handle the cool stuff?
Check
this out!!
Make your site STANDOUT
in your viewer's Favorites:
This only works for viewers using Internet Explorer, but it is sooooo
cool! If you want your listing in Internet Explorer's Favorites list to
standout from the rest, try this. Search your hard drive for *.ico and find all the icon files on your computer. Pick one you like (or download
one from the internet....just go to any search engine and search on the word
"icon"). Now, copy it into your FrontPage web......put it in
your root directory, NOT in your images folder, and rename this icon, "favicon.ico"
(without the quotes). Now, publish your web (or upload favicon.ico to your
root directory via FTP). Now, when anyone adds your site to their
Favorites, this icon will appear by your site's name in their Favorite's
list. Try it now! If you are using Internet Explorer, add this page
to your Favorites now and you will see the new icon I have added. Sure
stands out from the rest of those E's, doesn't it? (Note: If you have previously
added this page to your Favorites, you may have to delete it and add it again
now to see the icon.)

If you have both
FrontPage and Internet Explorer opened, you can use drag-and-drop
to preview pages. In Folders view, select the
page's icon and drag it down to the IE button on the taskbar. Hover there for a second, and the
browser window will pop up. Move the mouse pointer
anywhere on the window and release the mouse button. Your page appears,
ready for you to preview.
One of my favorite things about FrontPage is how easily it incorporates pages
created in other Office programs.
For example, this
calendar was created in
MS Publisher 2000, saved as a webpage and imported into FrontPage. It took
about 4 minutes to do.
And,
my
résumé was created in MS Word 2000, saved
as a webpage and imported into FrontPage in a jiffy also.
You can also create presentations in PowerPoint 2000, spreadsheets in Excel
2000, and databases in Access 2000 which are easily saved as webpages and
imported into FrontPage. Jobs that, with any other web design software,
can be monumental.
Try it yourself and you will see how easy it is!
Read my article from
AnyFrontPageBytes which tells more about how to do this.
When you click on a link in your web page, do you see
a little hook at the lower right corner of your graphic?

Having trouble setting a background in a table and getting it to display in
Netscape?
The background attribute works differently in Netscape and Internet Explorer
when it is applied to a table. In Explorer, the image will appear over the
entire background of the table. But in Navigator the image will repeat in each
cell of the table. To make Navigator duplicate the look of Explorer, you need to
enclose the table into another table with only one cell. Give the background
image to that outer table, but be sure to have an invisible GIF as the
background of the inner table.
