Question submitted by Iris:

In your last issue, Hal gave a tip regarding how to eliminate the password prompt from Microsoft upon boot up. I followed his advice and used Run Control userpasswords2 , and now I get the following message: "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." How do I get rid of this whole password thing? Thank you very much!

Answer from Hal Cardona:

Iris, when you do this using control userpasswords2, there are a couple of caveats.

1.  To make it work you must be logged on with an account that has Admin rights.
2.   If you are using XP Home the Account you select when prompted can not be named Administrator.
3.  You must enter and confirm the account name and password you wish to use.  That account should have Admin rights or you will need to log on with Admin rights to get some things done, like adding new hardware.

Hope this helps.

Question submitted by Brian Fowler, Ireland:

Is there a way to send change an out going e-mail to a form so that the recipient can complete fields and return?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Hi. It was my thinking that you would be better off using Word to do this, instead of Outlook (especially since you say you are using Outlook 97 which really stinks .. that's why Microsoft updated it to 98 for FREE). Just make your form in Word where it's simple to create fields they can fill in ... then mail it to them as an attachment ... or, Charlene Russ says this:

Answer from Charlene Russ:

Yes, just create the email in HTML format and write it as you would an HTML web page. You can create your HTML form page in Dreamweaver, or MS Word and then use it as an email template. Or a simpler solution would be to use an attached MS Word Doc and have the recipient fill in the desired values. Good luck.

Reply from Brian:

Linda, pass on my thanks to Charlene

Question submitted by Billy Wayne:

I am trying to enter my password to download something I bought and the page is blank.  The people at the company tell me I must have java.  How do I get java? I have Windows XP Home version which I thought had everything.

Answer from Linda Johnson:

The latest version of Windows XP does not include Java.  Because of Microsoft's legal dispute with Sun Java, they are no longer allowed to include it with Windows, so you will have to download Sun Java for free from here: http://java.com/en/index.jsp  Or, you can use this link to download the original version of Microsoft's Virtual Java Machine: http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html  That should fix you right up.

Reply from Billy Wayne:

Thank you Linda!  This fixed it for me.  If only the company that sold me the product was half as helpful as you.  I've sent a donation to your website through PayPal.  You saved the day!

Question submitted by bshituku at kenya-mail.com:

When I turn on my computer running Windows ME the task bar appears for like 2 seconds and disappears then the monitor doesn't go any further. It freezes I have tried to restart my computer over 30 times but nothing happens.. Ever seen this problem before? Help Thanks

Answer from Hal Cardona:

Try booting your computer in safe mode (press F8 just prior to the ME screen). If the PC boots successfully in to safe mode try rebooting normally, you may be successful. If that doesn't help, boot back to safe mode and try using system restore to restore to a date prior to the problem occurring. If that doesn't help go to safe mode and run msconfig (Start --> Run --> msconfig) and try turning off some the programs on the start up tab that are loading with Windows.

Reply from bshituku at kenya-mail.com:

Thanks for your info. I tried and it worked, thanks so much.

Question submitted by bshituku at kenya-mail.com:

I got another problem on my computer. My Operating system ie win 98 is in French. Is there a way I can change it to English without re installing or changing the operating system? Also, each time I open my browser, everything on the page is not clear, including the pictures and words on the page. The page is blurred, very faint.. Tried to adjust the monitor screen but same thing happens. Do you have a fix for this? Operating system is win 98 SE (French version) Browser : Internet explorer 6.0 service pack 1 Just did windows update

Answer from Linda Johnson:

As for your language problem, there could be one of two scenarios....if you have purchased a French edition of Windows, you won't be able to change that....OR, you may just have your regional settings set up for French and that you CAN change...go to your Control Panel and double click on Regional Settings and choose either English (US) or English (UK).  Below is a reply from Kathy Jacobs about your blurry screen:

Answer from Kathy Jacobs:

The blur is due to outdated video drivers. I would recommend Googling the manufacturer of the video card in the machine and finding out if there is a newer driver available. (Most people don’t realize that Windows update only updates the OS. It does not check for driver updates, Office updates, etc. Those things need to be checked separately.

Question submitted by Alex Tang:

My WinXP Pro is an upgrade version (Chinese Traditional). Although I have the need to use PenPower software to write documents in Chinese, but I actually prefer the Windows/Office displays all in English. The very reason is that it will be much easier to follow tips/instructions/guides & tutorials etc which are 99.9% presented in English.  Is there a  feature in WinXP which allow the section of a particular language display? Please advise.  Regards

Answer from Charlene Russ:

I would suggest that you write to Microsoft and ask them about offering this feature in the future. If this is possible I'm certainly not aware of it.

Question submitted by Rex:

I would like to make the first letter in a line bigger than the line and have the rest of the line centred to the first letter. I have seen this explained somewhere so could you please point me to the article, It would be much appreciated.  Thanks. I learn most of my software functions from your newsletter and I commend you on the excellent knowledge & presentation.

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Hi Rex. I wrote a tip about this for The Newbie Club. The feature you are referring to is called "Dropped Caps".  Here's the tip I wrote:  http://newbieclub.com/officetips/20011025.htm  And thanks for the nice comments, my friend :-)

Question submitted by Tina:

Is there a way to insert page breaks when printing frontpage folders.  Because of the many graphics we have in our intranet we have to print everything in landscape format, this however often breaks the tables.  Therefore is there a way to avoid this and furthermore is it possible to select specific pages for printing?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

FrontPage is a web design program .... it's not intended for printing. If you want to control how something prints, put it in a Word document or something because html does not allow you to control page breaks. An html "page" is not really a printed page, it's a webpage, so as far as FrontPage is concerned, one html file is all one page. It just breaks when you print it, when it can't fit any more on a page. Web pages are not a good medium for printing ... you  are better off copying the information out of the FrontPage file and pasting it into Word, then printing it...Word will let you tell it where to put the page breaks.

Reply from Tina:

Thanks so much for your reply ... it was a big help and lots of time I've found with those queries nothing ever comes back.

Question submitted by Declan:

I've just had to re-install my PC windows 98. But since re-installing Word some of the tools normally found on the bottom of the page are missing for ex. how to change the font colour.  Please advise!!

Answer from Linda Johnson:

That's your Drawing Toolbar .... go to the View menu and select Toolbars>Drawing.

Question submitted by A.Shepherd:

I am trying to upload a picture onto a website, but it says I have to have 1.MB or less. The picture I am trying to upload has 1.05 MB's. I have tried cropping the picture and trying to make it smaller but it doesn't reduce the MB's How do I reduce my MB level if I want to upload something onto a website and the MB's have to be 1.MB or less?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

What format is the picture in? If it's a .bmp (which is very large), you can try opening it in a graphics program and using File>Save As to save it in a different format (like a .gif or .jpg) .... the height and width of the picture don't affect the size nearly as much as the file type.  If you have a graphics editing program like Photoshop, you can use that to optimize it and reduce the size.

(NOTE to A.Shepherd.  When I replied to you privately, I offered to optimize the picture for you if you sent it to me.  However, my reply to your hotmail address bounced back at me and told me your mailbox was full.  How can you expect to receive a reply to your question when you have a full mailbox?)
