A Patch for the Patch
~~Mike Baynes, MikesWhatsNews
As you are probably all
aware another virus has taken advantage of a long standing bug in Internet
Explorer. Bugbear-B ~ W32/Bugbear-B takes advantage of the MIME and an
IFRAME vulnerability in some versions of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft
Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer. Part of the problem is that
Microsoft's patch issued back in May 16, 2001; Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS01-027,
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-027.asp,
does not always work if you have upgraded IE5.1/5.5 to IE6.Microsoft has
issued a bulletin on this problem;
The MS01-020 and MS01-027 Security Patches May Not Be Applied When You
Upgrade to Internet Explorer 6
Would this be a patch for the patch? <G>
It is worth noting that Bugbear-B is not the only virus this month that
is an alphabetical extension of a previous version. SobigC was also a
variation of an earlier version. Part of the unusual elements of this virus
is Sobig-C will not spread if the date is June 8th, 2003 or later. This
leaves me to wonder if the virus writer may have another virus ready to take
its place
Both of these virus are spread thorough the email via attachments.
Fortunately IE6 has incorporated new features in its SP1 that help protect
us from these malicious attachments.
